The selection of equipment should not be left to the last minute. So everyone is thinking about it now!

Although a detailed kit list will be published in the coming months, expeditioners are advised not to go out and buy everything new. Most of their current kit will be adequate for Africa.

The weight of their kit will be proportionate to their enjoyment, no one wants to stagger around under a mountain of gear (do they!)

Kit must be enclosed within their Rucksack (including the sleeping mat) when it is surrendered it to the mercy of the Airport baggage handlers. Things hanging on the outside will not survive the journey and will not be there when on arrival.

Most people spend money on 3 items before going on expedition to Africa. Firstly a pair of boots. We don’t recommend using smart expensive leather hill walking boots in Africa. There are a number of light weight, trainer type boots which will be perfectly adequate. A canvas boot that will gives some ankle support, as well as protecting ankles against thorns is best.

The second item people buy is a camera (and film), using the old adage .. ‘take nothing but photos leave nothing but footprints’. Advise on camera selection can be given by expedition leaders.

Finally each buddy pair will need to provide a tent. We recommend a cheap lightweight dome tent, which expeditioners may decided to leave behind for local Scouting or others to use.

A full kit list will be published shortly
